October Smalls SAL & some great give-aways :)

Well it's time for the Smalls SALupdate. This SAL is  hosted by Heather of Stitching Lotus and you can read more about it here

As I've been working exclusively on smalls this month and have already shared most of them with you, this is the one I finished last night :)

Freebie design by Erica Michaels
Stitched 1x1 on hand dyed evenweave
Using DMC and House of Embroidery threads

I had previously stitched this as an exchange piece and finished it off as a needlebook

I'm thinking that while this new version is slightly smaller than the first as I had stiched it over 1, I'll probably finish it off as a needlebook too :)

You can find this and other charts here :)

If you haven't entered her give-aways yet (yes there's more than one!), then please head over to Nancy of Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe who is hosting a few of them!

First off there's the Halloween Sampler chart giveaway here - closing date to enter the 31st October

Then she's giving away her EIGHTY skeins of her 1795 Sampler Floss Collection! (I'm drooling at the thought of that!!) Closing date to enter is the 15th November so head over here and enter :) She'll be selecting two winners - how generous!!

She's also giving away 62 colours of her 1840 Floss Collection !! Closing date to enter is November 30th so head on over here!

And....ANOTHER giveaway! You can win her "Jingle as ye Enter" Sampler Chart by entering before the 30th November here. In this same post she is ALSO giving away a second chart pack for "Decorating the Tree". Three winners for each chart so head over and enter!!

Mega Mini Month Madness Week 4 :)

Busy week? Get much done? Or just reel from day to day and pray that the weekend would hurry up and get there ? :D

Mine was a bit of a mix really.....once I got over Wednesday it was pretty smooth sailing! I think that could very well be because my boss was off from Thursday celebrating Diwali so being in the office was so much less hurried and frenetic than usual!

On the stitchy front....I managed to get these lovelies completed....

Cover kit - CorssStitcher Magazine
Issue 279 - June 2014

I love owls! I know that the whole idea that they're wise is really a misconception.....but to me they're really gorgeous birds. I have a collection of them not real ones :)....I should take a pic and share them one day!

I stitched this little bitty on some evenweave that I'd purchased a couple of years ago....I wanted it small enough to be a fob so stitched it over 1. I have a feeling though that my eldest is going to claim this as her own though.....not that she stitches (that's my youngest bug's thing!) but she'll no doubt use it on one of her bags.....guess that's an excuse to stitch another!

Halloween Snail designed by Barbara Ana
Stitched on evenweave
DMC threads over 1 x 1

I really have no idea why I've waited this long to stitch Halloween designs! It's not really a huge thing here BUT the designs are such fun that I think it's fast becoming my favourite stitchy holiday! If you'd like to stitch this freebie, then head on over here

Have a wonderful week all....until next post!

Take care

Around the World Blog Hop

I'm late with this post....I know I am should have been posted on Monday...but life and it's grubby little fingers kept interfering! But enough of the excuses!

I received an email from Brigitte who can be found blogging here, "At Brigitte's Place", inviting me to participate in this fun, friendly hop around the world in cyberland :) Thanks for the invitation Brigitte! If you haven't yet visited her, you should have a peek at the eye candy Brigitte has on her blog! part of the hop, there are a few questions that are asked....which I'll attempt to answer without going off the beaten track!

The questions are:
1. What are you currently working on?
2. How does my work differ from others?
3. Why do I write/create/do what I do?
4. How does my creating process work?

Well...let's answer what I'm working on brings a blush of shame and embarrasment to my cheeks! Before discovering the wonderful world of blogland and forums and with the assistance of enablers from all over the world (even if they may not be aware that they're enablers!) I went from a "one project" lass to a "driven out of my mind by too many things on the go" lass! I have a few really HUGE projects on the go....ummmm....ok....not everyone would call them huge, but in my book they're HUGE...HUGE!

I started my first HAED design this year June...and after 4 months I managed to complete the first column on the first page, and a smidge more!

Once I finish about 185,000 stitches....I'll have this piece of gorgeousness!

HAED - Garden of Delight
by Willian Morris
Stitched 1x1 on 25ct evenweave with DMC threads

Check back in about 10 years :D

I am also trying to work my way through the starts I made in 2012 when I signed up for Crazy January Challenge....ummm......I won't comment on the moment of insanity! Needless to say I am slowly whittling through the pile! There's a list of projects I currently have on the go on the right hand side of my you  can have a look see if you'd like to see what other biggy bits I'm playing with. To entertain myself I try and rotate pieces and am currently participating in the Mega Mini Month Madness hosted by Pull the Other Thread as well as the 2014 Smalls SAL being hosted by Heather at Stitching Lotus.

What I do is not in any way different or special to any crafter.....except I may bea WHOLE lot slower at it! I've never been a speedy stitcher - and I generally only stitch at night once my tribe of 4 (yes I counted hubby in with the kids!) has been sent to bed!

Other than cross-stitching, I  practise rudimentary knitting and surface embroidery....have tried to dabble in hardanger (not with great success ....YET!) and taught myself to crochet using a variety of books and You Tube and Blog tutorials. My sewing machine was finally dusted off this year and I'm trying to teach myself how to use it properly....hopefully there'll be a quilt someday!

There is no process to my madness....I just DO...and hope it turns out alrighty!

And I know this is not one of the questions but I wanted to share either ways (the beaten track I mentioned up at the top :D

When I was a children (not so long ago I know :P) we were forced to do needlework at Primary School as a subject....yes FORCED to!!! I HATED it! My embroidery pieces had so many holes in them my mum had to to fix them ALL THE TIME! My knitting pieces had even more holes in that they were beyond redemption and I have a very distinct memory of having to put my hand out for a few whacks from the ruler as I had "forgotten" my knitting that day.....yes......back when teachers were allowed to discipline kids with a ruler! Anyways....that's a topic for another discussion...I'm merely trying to let you know how much I detested and hated and abhored any form of needlework! As soon as I got to High School and could drop the hateful subject...I did! I did Home Economics which wasn't *that* much better...but hey! At least I could EAT the products of my ventures! And then.....about 10 years ago, I bought a small surface embroidery kit and played with it to relieve my boredom.....and about 6 years ago a friend of mine showed me cross stitch....and I was hooked! Now who would have guessed that the little girl in pigtails (yes....I really did have 2 pigtails!) would end up enjoying creating with her hands again? :)

Anyways....if you managed to make it through all that rambling....thanks for reading!

Now...I needed to pass the baton along to other bloggers, but unfortunately most of my ladies were unable to play along. Justine was invited to play along by another blogger.....and since she'll be posting her responses next week Monday, 27th October, head on over to her blog here and get to know a lil bit more about this very talented lady!

Hope you all have a great week!

Until the next post!

Take care

Mega Mini Month Madness Week 3 :)

It's Week 3 already!! How much fun are you all having with October? Are you preparing to host a Halloween party? Attending one?? Or just stocking up for the little monsters who may be knocking at your door?

I think I've mentioned previously that Halloween is not a big thing here in South Africa, Over the years its definitely being seen more of in the stores, but it's not even half the whoop whoop that probably goes on in the States :) That being said, I have to admit that I'm often tempted to do some ghoulish stitching, and this year I finally succumbed when I came across this Halloween inspired bookmark...

Stitched on 14 count aida with DMC threads
Isn't this just too cute! :) My son loves it and it has the place of honour in the latest "Super Powers" book that we're reading! (Yes..the book with the gory multi-headed monster you see peaking out beneath the bookmark !)
If you'd like to stitch this freebie chart, you'll find it here. She also has a version that replaces the pumpkin with a little spook :) Oh ....and quite a few charts that you may also enjoy stitching!

My next finish for the week is still in keeping with the pumpkin's not *quite* Halloween but does feature a crow and a pumpkin :) my mind.....Halloween!

Stitched on 32 count Belfast linen with DMC threads
This lovely design is offered free by Teresa of "Crocettandofra le pesti". She has so many lovely designs. Just drop her your email address in the comments section on the chart that intersts you, and she mails them to you. Like I said...she has a quite a few designs so I;m sure you'll find something that would tweek your interest :)

It's been another busy but wonderful weekend out here :) In between karate practises, parties, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Math tuition and school play practises...I managed to get some stitching done and splice the knuckle of my ring finger on my left hand open.....a gorgeously deep cut all the way down ...I think it's to the bone but hubby assured me it's not. It's throbbing like a doozy right now....and nice and swollen too.....hubby said it may need stitches but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Who stitches up a knuckle anyway??!

Well I'm off to get some paracetemol ...or some such that may deaden thepain a bit and let me get an hours stitching in.....Have a lovely evening all :)

Take care

Mega Mini Month Madness Week 2 :)

This has been such a lovely week :) Busy...but a good busy! The weather was lovely...not too hot...not too cold.....but jussstttt right (just like Papa Bear's porridge!)

I managed to get some bits done.....

The second card of the free kit that came with Issue 149 of WOX

I also finished off this bookmark, which is a free pattern that you can download here
You'll need to register with your email, but that gives you access to all their free downloads :)

I changed the colours for the flower and decided that I didn't want to backstitch it .....overall I'm happy with this and so is little bug :)

The last bit that I finished this week was a bit of a disappointment.I had bought this hardanger kit many years ago when I just started cross stitching - it was part of a lot that I won on ebay. I thought this would be a good opportunity to stitch this ..

The plan was to finish it and instead of stitching it as a napkin holder, to leave it and use it as a bookmark.
Unfortunately this kit could quite possibly be the absolute worse hardanger kit EVER. Instructions are virtually nonexistant - you have a chart, a sheet illustrating common hardanger stitches (many of which are not a part of what is required to complete this kit) and no instruction re: thread cutting or starting .....

Once I completed the outer buttonhole stitch border, I decided that some improvisation may be in order, and added some snowflakes from this bookmark.

The end result was this

I also spent a little bit of time out in the garden this morning!
The kids helped plant out seedlings this morning :)

By the afternoon we were all ready for a nap....

Did you have a good weekend?

Take care

Mega Mini Month Madness Week 1 :)

Would you believe that the first week of October is just about over? I feel as if someone keeps on using some kind of futuristic device that freezes me at the beginning of the month, and then unfreezes me at the end of the month and then I'm like ....."Where did the month go!! I don't remember!!" Have aliens perhaps taken over our time stream? :O :O

Well that's a topic for another conversation!

I've signed up for the Mega Mini Month Madness being hosted by Pull The Other Thread - rules are simple....during the month of October we stitch on any mini project - ornament/card sized littles, and to post our progress once a week throughout the month :) This is the perfect opportunity to get through all those little free kits and other odds!

So without much further ado...what I've been working on this week....

I first saw this little stitchery on Jenny's blog, and loved what she'd done with the dress. I knew that I'd want to stitch it at some time so this was the perfect opportunity! The original design can be found here, on the blog of Sylvie Blondeau. From getting the design onto fabric to completion took me all of 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday) isn't that speedy?!!! I love how quickly stitcheries work up...cross stitching always seem to take so much longer!
I did this on a little bag I had laying around the house....little bug has claimed it as her library bag :)
I also stitched up this little koala bear card kit that came with Issue 249 of Cross Stitcher. The kit came with googly eyes....but I didn't like the effect so did french knots instead!

Issue 249 of Cross Stitcher cover kit
And finished off this sweet lil card, also a free kit, that came with Issue 179 of World of Cross Stitching.

I've already started the second card that came with this poppy....and will finish off the third one too!

Are you having a lazy Sunday? Or running around doing things? We're planning to take the kids out for lunch in  a few hours....and then we'll probably head to the movies....the kids are on school break this week so we can be out later than usual on a Sunday :)

If you'd like to see what all the other participants of the MMMM have done, then you can find a list of stitchers here.

Have a lovely week all...until the next Mega Mini post!

Take care

HAED slow progress...

Well.....kinda slow really....
I've never been a speedy stitcher to start, and with this 1 over 1 things are considerably slower than usual! BUT....that being said....I *have* finished Column 1 on Page 1 :D

I know , I know....that's a mere drop in the ocean on this BAP :D

So without further ado...."Garden of Delight"before...and after

I have signed up to participate in the Mega Mini Month Madness hosted on Pull the Other Thread :) So for this month, the HAED and Castle will take a back seat while I attempt to stitch and finish as many littles as possible :)

Happy crafting all!

Take care
